Watch Animation of T.I. Saving Creed’s Scott Stapp After Suicide Attempt

New Spotify series ‘Drawn and Recorded’ illustrates music history lore

A new animated series from Spotify and producer T Bone Burnett titled Drawn and Recorded will take a look, via animation and voiceover, at various music-related stories and lore. In the first segment, premiering exclusively on Rolling Stone, Burnett revisits rapper T.I.‘s rescue of Creed singer Scott Stapp after a 2012 drug-fueled suicide attempt in Miami.

Burnett narrates the video, chronicling Creed’s rise to commercial success and how the pressures of fame led Stapp to the edge of a hotel balcony. After a drug binge, Stapp fell 40 feet off the ledge, fracturing his skull and breaking his hip and nose after landing on another balcony several floors below. Rapper T.I., coincidentally staying in the same hotel, found the bloodied singer and had him rushed to a hospital, saving his life.

“T.I. had been many things to many people – to Scott, he was a messenger sent to save him,” said Burnett. “T.I. got Scott to safety; Scott thanked God for sending him an unlikely angel.” This was the second time T.I. had a run-in with suicide, Burnett narrated. In 2010, two years earlier, T.I. convinced a man not to jump off a building. “The lord works in mysterious ways,” Burnett says.

Drawn and Recorded will tackle more legendary music stories, including Kurt Cobain’s inspiration for “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” Louis Armstrong making Richard Nixon his drug mule and Lemmy Kilmister getting revenge on his old band by forming Mötorhead.

Drawn and Recorded is set to premiere on Thursday.
