Watch Ana Tijoux Hit the Streets for ‘Somos Sur’ Video – Premiere

Grammy-nominated Chilean rapper connects global resistance movements in new clip

With her track “Somos Sur,” Chilean rapper Ana Tijoux went global, collaborating with like-minded Palestian Shadia Mansour, and now the song’s music video (premiered here) follows a similar course, showing both artists performing at street fairs in their native countries.

“‘Somos Sur’ is about the importance of resistance, not only in Chile, but around the world,” Tijoux tells Rolling Stone. “Global resistance movements, whether in Latin America, Africa or the Middle East, are fighting against the same patterns of violence that have repeated themselves throughout history. Which means many of these groups share a similar set of demands. We are asking for a free Palestine just like we’re asking for an independent Wallmapu in Chile, without police control.”

A follow-up to 2010’s Grammy-nominated La Bala, Vengo peaked at Number 15 on the Billboard Latin albums chart. In Rolling Stone‘s review of the record, Will Hermes wrote that “the attack this time is harder, but no less thoughtful or poetic,” before concluding, “The gist of ‘Antipatriarca’ should be self-explanatory. If not, it’s a damn good reason to start learning Spanish.”

Last month, Tijoux performed with Lauryn Hill, MC Lyte and Jean Grae at the Kennedy Center’s Rock Like a Girl concert, and on July 9th, she’ll come to New York to perform a Summerstage showcase celebrating the 15th annual Latin Alternative Music Conference.
