Watch Alessia Cara’s Electrifying ‘SNL’ Debut

Singer performs “Scars to Your Beautiful” and “River of Tears” nearly five years after predicting her ‘SNL’ performance

Nearly five years after then-15-year-old Alessia Cara tweeted “I wanna go on SNL one day,” the Canadian singer made her Saturday Night Live debut, performing a pair of tracks from her 2015 LP Know-It-All.

Cara opened her musical guest spot with an electrifying rendition of her hit single “Scars to Your Beautiful”; compared to the popped-up version that’s routinely on radio, the singer delivered a more mature interpretation, complete with backup vocalists and a string section.

For her second SNL performance of the night, Cara delivered an aching take on the ballad “River of Tears,” a Know-It-All bonus track, backed only by a piano.

In a Tonight Show interview earlier in the week, Cara called the SNL experience “fun and scary,” and she and Jimmy Fallon talked about her prescient 2012 tweet. “I should start tweeting things more often,” Cara joked.
