A Tribe Called Quest made their first television appearance together in over 15 years Friday as the trailblazing hip-hop group’s Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Jarobi White joined forces with the Roots for an energetic rendition of “Can I Kick It?” on The Tonight Show.
The founding members of ATCQ staged their one-off reunion to celebrate the 25th anniversary reissue of their debut LP People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm, which was released Friday. Although the Tribe hadn’t performed together in a few years, they were still perfectly in sync as they brought 30 Rock down with their ferocious take on the Lou Reed-sampling cut. Q-Tip even dipped into the Tonight Show crowd where lucky members of the audience yelled, “Yes, you can!” into the rapper’s microphone when asked “Can y’all kick it?”
The Tonight Show visit marked A Tribe Called Quest’s first gig together in two years, when the group served as Kanye West’s opening act for a pair of Yeezy Tour shows that Q-Tip stated would be ATCQ’s final performances together. Speaking to Rolling Stone, Phife admitted, “I think it is ludicrous that we are not performing together.” While the rapper wouldn’t clarify what’s preventing a full-scale reunion, he did say, “It’s dumb, and I don’t agree with it and we’re doing the fans a great injustice by not getting together and rocking, and that’s all I can really speak on as far as that goes.”
