2 Chainz performed a glorious version of his new song “Good Drank” on The Tonight Show on Monday, with help from Atlanta rapper Gucci Mane, Kanye West associate Mike Dean, a choir and members of the Roots.
“Good Drank,” which appeared on 2 Chainz’s 2016 Hibachi for Lunch mixtape, celebrates the rapper’s climb up the income ladder. “Used to treat my mattress like the ATM,” he remembers at the start of the first verse. “Today I’m in the Maybach, and that car came with some drapes/ You know I look like a safe, I put you back in your place.” The recorded version of the single features rapping from Gucci and a hook from Migos member Quavo. The sparse piano loop that anchors the tune was produced by frequent Kanye West producer Mike Dean.
During the live set, 2 Chainz and Gucci Mane rapped with eight backup singers and a musical director dancing behind them. The choir interjected gospel flourishes, magnifying the tale of uplift and adding density to the skeletal beat. 2 Chainz ended the performance seated happily on top of a grand piano.
Earlier this year, 2 Chainz won his first Grammy award earlier for the song “No Problem,” a collaboration with Chance the Rapper and Lil Wayne. In addition, “Good Drank” recently cracked the top 40 on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart.
