Malian singer and guitarist Vieux Farka Touré returned to his roots to film his new video for “Peace.”
“Mali is my home,” Touré tells Rolling Stone. “This video is put together to be like a home movie of life in Mali. I wanted something that felt like it was intimate and gave a real look at the joy of our lives when we are enjoying peaceful times.”
The video accomplishes just that: scenes of smiling children and time-lapse sunsets transport the viewer to the African nation, while his collaborator Sidiki Diabate lends gentle kora alongside Touré’s soothing acoustic guitar. “Peace” addresses the ban on music and current slavery in Mali and is featured on Touré’s new album, Mon Pays (in English, My Country); he will support the disc with a handful of East Coast dates in October.
Says Touré, “May God protect Mali and return these happy times to us for many generations to come.”
