Video: Ratatat Talk Up ‘Aggressive’ Guitar-Driven New LP Backstage at Coachella

“It’s sounding new,” says Ratatat’s Mike Stroud of their next album. “Lots of guitar that sounds like guitar, not keyboard.”

Ratatat have come a long way since their first time at Coachella four years ago. That was when the New York electronic duo played to the biggest crowd up to that point in their career. “Back then, we just had this tiny little projector and, like, a bedsheet,” says Ratatat guitarist Mike Stroud. “It’s exciting to come back now, because we have a full production now.”

The group returns to the road in late May, but right now its members are working on the next album. “We’ve been holed up in a beach house in Long Island recording for the past month,” says Stroud. “We have four or five songs in the works. It’s sounding new — much more aggressive than the last album. Lots of guitar that actually sounds like guitar, not keyboard.” Between takes, the pair has also been creating lots of visual art. “We filled up the entire kitchen with hundreds of drawings from the newspaper,” says Ratatat keyboardist/producer Evan Mast. “Maybe we’ll forgo music all together and just make drawings.”
