Video: Carrie Brownstein Previews Wild Flag LP, ‘Portlandia’ Season Two

‘We’re just interested in documenting our live sound,’ she tells Rolling Stone

Wild Flag – Carrie Brownstein’s new supergroup with fellow Sleater-Kinney alum Janet Weiss, Helium’s Mary Timony and the Minders’ Rebecca Cole – were one of the most ubiquitous acts at SXSW this year, playing eight shows throughout the week. But Brownstein seemed energized by the busy schedule. “It’s really fun to be back in a band,” she told Rolling Stone. “I love performing. We have a blast. I’ve fallen a couple times on stage, Mary has fallen on the stage. I have a pretty bad wound on my thumb that’s barely healing. But music, especially rock music, should be a little dangerous up there.”

Wild Flag will hit the studio soon to record their debut LP, which Merge Records will likely release in early September. “For the album, we’re interested in just documenting our live sound,” Brownstein said. “That’s what’s really nice about having a first record. It doesn’t have to be overly produced, overly thought-out. It’s just, ‘Here is where we are right now.’ And then the second album can be painstaking and produced by Brian Eno and have 25 keyboards and stuff like that.”

This summer, Brownstein and Saturday Night Live‘s Fred Armisen will begin shooting season two of Portlandia, their IFC comedy sketch series. “The second season is a police procedural drama, but it takes place in Portland,” she joked. “It’s going to be a pretty serious show.”
