Vaselines Return With First Disc in 20 Years

Scottish duo’s ‘Sex With an X’ will arrive September 14th on Sub Pop

The Vaselines will release their first album in 20 years on September 14th when their long-awaited second LP Sex With an X arrives on Sub Pop. The Scottish duo of Eugene Kelly and Frances McKee, who gained a new American audience after Kurt Cobain covered “Molly’s Lips,” “Son of a Gun” and “Jesus Wants Me For a Sunbeam” with Nirvana, released their lone album Dum-Dum back in 1990. The band reunited in 2008 reunion released retrospective Enter the Vaselines in May 2009.

On Sex With An X Kelly and McKee will be joined Stevie Jackson and Bob Kildea from Belle & Sebastian on guitar and bass, as well as drummer Michael McGaughrin from the band the 1990s. The album’s 12 tracks, along with two B sides, were recorded in the span of 13 days. One listen to the Vaselines’ new song “I Hate the 80s,” available at, is more than enough proof that the two-decade hiatus did nothing to dull Kelly and McGee’s ability to craft big hooks, sweet harmonies and biting lyrics.

Last year, Kelly and McKee stopped by the Rolling Stone studios for intimate performances of four of their best cuts: “Jesus Wants Me For a Sunbeam,” “Molly’s Lips,” “Son of a Gun” and “Rory Rides Me Raw.” Watch “Son of a Gun” now, and check out the new album’s track list.
