Unknown Mortal Orchestra Turn Music Vid Into Video Game

Lionel Williams’ eye-popping clip for “Multi-Love” also available as interactive video game app

With their mind-altering new video for “Multi-Love,” Unknown Mortal Orchestra invite fans into an elastically trippy universe of shapes, landscapes and colors. The clip, directed by Lionel Williams, is also available as an interactive video game app that allows PCMac and Unity users to navigate the psychedelic visuals by using their mouse/trackpad and W, A, S and D keys.

“It is meant to represent the vacuum of space by impressing upon inter-dimensional unfolding, immaterial objects and time-driven reverberation of events,” Williams said in a statement. “The virtual space allows for most 3D objects to trail in time – based on the directions one moves. You can construct & paint the objects in space to stretch them in any direction, to create infinitely vast compositional spaces.”

The soulful “Multi-Love” is the title track from Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s upcoming third LP, out May 26th via Jagjaguwar. In February, frontman-chief songwriter Ruban Nielson talked to Stereogum about the album’s more optimistic lyrical themes – a change from the more lonely worldview he showcased on 2013’s II.

“I wanted to start living a more subversive dream,” he told the publication. “No more hospitals and other strange beds. No more hanging out with my kids with a leaking nose. I wanted to put danger aside and focus on love. A new kind of futuristic multi-love. Not some hippie bullshit, but a hard-edged, cynical, and sharp kind of love. Got to keep it hard-edged or it becomes invalidated.”
