tUnE-yArDs ‘Gangsta’ with the Roots

Wild performance of ‘Gangsta’ from new album ‘w h o k i l l’

tUnE-yArDs made their first-ever talk show appearance last night on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. The band, who typically perform as a four-piece, were accompanied by members of the Roots for a rousing performance of “Gangsta,” one of the funkiest numbers on their acclaimed new album w h o k i l l. The fleshed-out rendition of the song included an all-new guest rap from Roots emcee Black Thought, but he was easily upstaged by frontwoman Merrill Garbus, whose big, bold voice and theatrical physicality translated very well to the small screen. A lot of late night television performances can be very stiff and overly professional, but this clip has a wonderful, raw energy, in part because it’s so obvious that everyone involved is having a total blast.
