‘True Detective’ DVD Exclusive: T Bone Burnett Talks Final Song

The HBO drama’s Season One DVD and Blu-Ray sets come out June 10th

HBO drama True Detective wrapped up its hugely acclaimed first season back in March with an episode titled “Form and Void.” And part of what made the episode so special is the music – specifically the climactic “The Angry River,” a brooding track written by music supervisor T Bone Burnett in the style of a classic murder ballad. In the exclusive clip available above (a bonus feature from the upcoming Season One Blu-Ray and DVD set), Burnett talks about the song’s origins with series creator-writer Nic Pizzolatto.

Five Things We Learned From ‘True Detective’

Burnett says the song (which features lyrics like “In the common town, they make a sound like the low, sad moan of prey”) grew out of discussions with Pizzolatto about the show, with the music drawing on the series’ haunting main theme. “This song suddenly appeared,” he says, while elsewhere noting the collaborative nature of the track. Pizzolatto praises the imagery of the title “The Angry River,” calling it “one of the most perfect Gothic expressions I’d ever heard.”

Season One of True Detective will hit shelves on June 10th in multiple formats: DVD, Blu-Ray with Digital HD and digital. According to a press release, the sets will include the full, eight-episode season, along with “extensive bonus materials” – including interviews with stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, more conversation material between Burnett and Pizzolatto and deleted scenes from the series.

Meanwhile, Pizzolatto has already started planning Season Two, which will feature three new characters and a California locale. Back in March, the writer-showrunner told HitFix that the second season would focus on “hard women, bad men and the secret occult history of the United States transportation system.”
