Trevin Hunte Eliminated on ‘The Voice’
It would have been difficult to imagine at the start of Season Three of The Voice that somehow Trevin Hunte wouldn’t be the last he-diva standing, but when the time came last night for Hunte to peace out from the semi-finals, it wasn’t much of a surprise. His backstory and tough road to self-confidence played well, but even with his immense pipes, he lacked a little spark. Into the final rounds go Cassadee Pope, Nicholas David and Terry McDermott, or Cass, Nick and Ter as host Carson Daly calls them.
‘The Voice’: Rolling Stone’s Complete Coverage
The most remarkable reveal of the night was just how this latest crop stacks up against the previous season’s talent. Team Christina’s operatic sub-Bublé Chris Mann, Cee Lo’s rough-hewn rocker Juliet Simms and Team Blake bad girl bumpkin RaeLynn all returned to the stage that made them, to show where they are now. Though all are perfectly fine singers, the qualitative difference between the current season’s finalists and the previous season was startling. Even with the questionable choices of last night’s just-for-fun team duets (Team Cee Lo did Mariah Carey’s “Hero,” while Blake’s two did “Little Talks” by Of Monsters and Men, which only provided a showcase for Pope), the top three standing are redoubtable vocalists.
On to the power rankings.
Coach: Team Blake
Rank: #1
Pope is still riding high with her cumulative vote tally, but it seems wholly possible that the other two dudes could still pose a threat, especially if they pull out some major sensitive-dad tear-jerking power ballad. Tonight, dressed like a pageant version of The Little Mermaid, Pope continued to sing with the confidence of someone who knows her fate. McDermott, on the other hand, looked unsettled, but maybe that’s because now that he’s hit the semi-finals, they have him wearing blush. Their duet on “Little Talks” was mediocrity in motion, but mostly because of the song choice.
Coach: Cee Lo Green
Rank: #2
David was sweating potential elimination, nervously adjusting his hat, but perhaps that was because he was the only person who hadn’t gotten to actually watch his moving tribute to his wife with “You Are So Beautiful” on Monday night. At least in comparison to Hunte, who had been trailing at the bottom for weeks, he had it in the bag. Hunte headed home but not before the two could mutilate “Hero,” trying as they sang to find a way to piece together a song that is entirely different in each of their hands. Alas, their fates had already been decided by the fickle voters of America.
Coach: Christina Aguilera
Rank: #3
Team Xtina pulls into third for last night simply on the basis of her Season Two prospect Chris Mann getting to brag that he recently performed for President Obama.
Coach: Adam Levine
Rank: #4
Last season, when the rules were different and the power remained in the judges’ hands until very near the end (now, America is boss!), Levine sent home Katrina Parker in favor of exploring his bromance with token unfamous ex-Mouseketeer/DILF Tony Lucca. Last night, they power chilled in the Sprint Nestspace and back slapped in lieu of performing.
Most curious revelation about how the contestants discovered their voice: After hearing Whitney Houston, Hunte began going into his family basement and belting her songs in the middle of the night. Second place: Nicholas David got busted by his mom crooning along with Alice in Chains in his room.
The case of the migrating goatee: Adam Levine’s weird beard was suddenly gone tonight, and appeared to have made its way, in a more extreme version, to Tony Lucca’s face.
Best matchy-matchy: Cee Lo’s QVC-grade Pucci print pink mom blouse went well with Xtina’s cotton candy striped wig.
