Tool’s Maynard James Keenan Wants You to Buy His Home

A few weeks before he turns 50, Maynard James Keenan, the frontman for Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer, has decided to let go of his multimillion-dollar Los Angeles abode. He had originally listed the four-bedroom, five-and-a-half-bathroom single-family house in January on realtor Keller Williams’ website with a $2,795,000 asking price, but dropped the price Tuesday to $2,495,000. Rolling Stone confirmed that the home belonged to Keenan with his realtor.

The domicile is located at the top of Beachwood Canyon, which borders Griffith Park. The listing explains that the home is “tucked underneath the Hollywood sign” and that it has no adjoining neighbors, offering “privacy and seclusion for the discerning” – words that likely apply to Keenan. The house was built in 2000, with Keenan doing extensive renovations to the property before moving in in 2001.

It describes the main house as “Mediterranean in design” with views of the park and city. It contains a courtyard, pool area, multiple waterfalls and it has a separate guesthouse “or recording-studio space,” as well as a freestanding garage. The two-story structure occupies over 11,000 square feet of real estate and the building itself measures 3,750 square feet.

“The most important thing about the house is the seclusion of it,” Jon Berentine, Managing Partner for Red Real Estate Group that represents Keenan, tells Rolling Stone. “It’s surrounded by parkland on three sides of the property. You’re away from everything.

“Maynard has gone to great lengths to import significant pieces that are built into the structure itself,” says Berentine. “The house reflects the travel and worldliness that is Maynard. It’s really been a sanctuary to him.”

Keenan, of course, is not living in the building at the moment. He is currently on tour with the prog-metal group, which kicked things off with a gig in Spokane, Washington, and is working its way around the southwest. He is also busy deflecting reports that Tool have finished a new album, rumors that were recently sparked when the group’s guitarist Adam Jones jokingly told a fan that the album is done “and coming out tomorrow.” The band’s last album came out in 2006, and it bears the portentous title 10,000 Days.
