The Whigs Sling Pizza in ‘Staying Alive’ – Premiere

Georgia rockers toss dough in fun new clip

Athens, Georgia alt-rockers the Whigs released their latest album, Enjoy the Company, back in September. Now they’re serving up a clever new clip for their gritty, horn-laden guitar jam “Staying Alive.”

Set at a pizza joint overseen by the world’s worst manager – who exhibits a profound misunderstanding of health standards by chain-smoking in the kitchen and tossing a salad with his hands – the exhausted waitstaff, played by the Whigs, serves up a multi-course lunch to the business crowd. Things turn ugly when one server accidentally spills some water on a client (but it was his fault). A shouting match ensues, and tensions explode into a food fight after another waiter fires the first meatball. Luckily, everyone comes to their senses – at least, in the sense that they all gang up on the manager, giving the band/waiters the perfect chance to make a run for it.

“I had been living in Nashville for about 48 hours when our buddy Hardy Morris came into town to record the Diamond Rugs album. After a long night of drinking and listening to their jams, I wrote ‘Staying Alive’ as the grand finale to the upcoming Whigs record,” frontman Parker Gispert tells Rolling Stone. “By the time we ended up sequencing the record, the song had become the opening track for Enjoy the Company. The video was shot in Louisville, Kentucky with Wax Fang’s own Scott Carney. Scott plays the part of our boss as we relive our innumerable days spent waiting tables.”
