The Drums Get Candid in Exclusive ‘Money’ Performance, Revealing Interview

Watch exclusive performance and interview with quick-rising band

With this candid version of their song ‘Money’ – which the Drums performed for Rolling Stone at Lollapalooza – it quickly becomes apparent that the Brooklyn band’s constant growth and hype over the past few years has been well deserved.  Ironically, the song itself – off the Drums’ forthcoming sophomore release Portamento (September 6th) – seems to deal primarily with coming to terms with a lack of success.  Financially speaking, at least.  “I want to buy you something,” sings frontman Jonathan Pierce, “but I don’t have any money.”  It’s a very indie-rock sentiment – but if the band ever does sell out, don’t say there weren’t warning signs.

In a revealing backstage interview, the Drums confess to Rolling Stone that their upcoming album is a lot more personal than anything off their previous releases. “Reality hit really hard after the hype of the first album and the first EP started settling down,” admits Pierce. “You realize what everything actually, really is.”  Speaking of which, the band calls out Lady Gaga as the anti-epitome of everything they’re aiming to be right now.  It gets interesting.
