For some fans, the Doors‘ story ends with 1971’s L.A. Woman, the band’s last album with iconic frontman-lyricist Jim Morrison, who died that same year. But the remaining trio – keyboardist Ray Manzarek, guitarist Robby Krieger and drummer John Densmore – carried on to record 1971’s Other Voices and the following year’s Full Circle, two under-appreciated (and long out-of-print) LPs now prepped for a new reissue campaign. Rhino Records will release the albums on individual vinyl and as a two-disc CD set on September 4th.

The CDs feature remastered audio from Other Voices producer Bruce Botnick, along with rare bonus track “Treetrunk,” which was first released as a B-side to Full Circle single “Get Up and Dance.” The 180-gram vinyl editions both feature “historically accurate sleeves,” including the expansive foldout zoetrope packaged with the original Full Circle LPs.

The Other Voices sessions date back to June 1971, while Morrison was living in Paris. The singer was found dead on July 3rd, but the band moved forward with Krieger and Manzarek sharing lead vocal duties. Following an American tour, the trio regrouped in 1972 to record Full Circle, which added jazz and funk elements to their trademark psychedelic blues-rock sound. The Doors disbanded following the subsequent tour, though the band members have reunited for several projects over the years – most notably at their 1993 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction.

Manzarek died in 2013 at age 74 following a long battle with bile duct cancer. Later that year, surviving members Krieger and Densmore – who battled over the years for legal rights to the band’s name – buried the hatchet for a Q&A and four-song set at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s “An Evening With the Doors.”
