“Substance,” from the album Carrier, which was released in August, deals with lapsing time and the fragility of memory. The album is also somewhat of a departure for the band, in that Meric Long, who typically plays acoustic guitar, plays almost entirely electric. The album comes on the tail of the death in December of Christopher Reimer, who joined the Dodos for a brief time after leaving the band Women.
“Substance” comes to life with tempestuous strings and cymbal crashes set against Long’s cry of “But you will forget and I will remember!” The band wasn’t able to get strings on the track when recording the album, but Long and his bandmates think the video more than makes up for it.
“We told Minna [Choi of the Magik Magik Orchestra] to just go wild, and I think she killed it, lifting the song to a whole different place,” says Long.
The Dodos are currently on an American tour and will be headed to Japan and Europe beginning later this month. You can get Carrier on iTunes and Amazon.
