The Church Debut Haunting ‘Pride Before a Fall’ Video, Promise ‘Best Album Ever’

Australian band promises next album ventures “further and deeper than ever before”

The Church‘s latest music video opens with a boy watching an old film reel of the band performing and continues into footage of one woman launching a fire-filled sky lantern. Another sits precariously in what appears to be a cluttered attic watching the same reel as the boy. In an e-mail to Rolling Stone, bassist and singer Steve Kilbey explains the confusing imagery like this: “A dodgy edifice is constructed from myths and legends and deadly sins. The whole damn thing starts to give as the dwellers strain the infrastructure, until it all falls down.” He then jokes, “Oh yeah, the Church are in it too!”

The video soundtracks the band’s new “Pride Before a Fall,” the first single off the forthcoming Further/Deeper, a 12-song album scheduled for North American release on February 3rd, 2015. Twenty-five albums in, Kilbey couldn’t be more confident. “Rejuvenated and refreshed, we have returned with our best album ever,” he continues, describing the record as going “further and deeper than ever before, with 1,001 guitars and throbbing bass and walloping drums.” The lyrics, meanwhile, were inspired by “dreams and the collective subconscious of all humanity.”

Unlike the previous 24 Church albums, Further/Deeper will not feature any contributions from Marty Willson-Piper on guitar, and Powderfinger’s Ian Haug will take his place. The songs were written in late 2013, and the track listing is available below:

1. “Vanishing Man”
