Teyana Taylor Brings Reverent ‘Gonna Love Me’ Performance to ‘Fallon’
Teyana Taylor performed a pair of songs from her new album K.T.S.E. — the pretty soul single “Gonna Love Me” and the brassy, hip-hop leaning “Rose in Harlem” — on The Tonight Show on Wednesday.
Taylor worked with a lean band, just a drummer, bassist and keyboard player. During “Gonna Love Me,” the trio conjured an unobtrusive groove behind her. Taylor showcased her voice in new ways on K.T.S.E., and she brought a similar energy to her performance on The Tonight Show, lingering in the lower part of her vocal range.
After “Gonna Love Me,” Taylor turned to “Rose in Harlem,” a high-energy rap song boosted by a horn sample and statements of resilience. Taylor was joined by three dancers here, and her drummer went into overdrive, filling empty spaces with loud flurries of percussion. Taylor aimed barbed lines at her critics. “No album out and I got ’em asking, ‘What do she do?'” she snarled, before answering their question: “I do everything.”
Both “Gonna Love Me” and “Rose In Harlem” appeared on K.T.S.E., Taylor’s latest album, which came out in June. The entire LP was produced by Kanye West. “Gonna Love Me” has become a modest hit, cracking the Top 25 at mainstream R&B/hip-hop radio.
