Tarantino Explains Frank Ocean’s Absence From ‘Django’ Soundtrack

When the tracklisting for the soundtrack to Django Unchained was released on Thursday, some observant readers might have perplexed: Where was Frank Ocean? The singer told GQ just a few weeks ago that he had written a new song for Quentin Tarantino’s latest film. 

In a statement given to Fuse today, the director explained why he cut Ocean’s contribution from the soundtrack. “Frank Ocean wrote a fantastic ballad that was truly lovely and poetic in every way, there just wasn’t a scene for it,” Tarantino said. “I could have thrown it in quickly just to have it, but that’s not why he wrote it and not his intention. So I didn’t want to cheapen his effort. But, the song is fantastic, and when Frank decides to unleash it on the public, they’ll realize it then.”

The soundtrack, which will include new music from John Legend and Rick Ross as well as older tracks by the likes of Jim Croce, hits stores on December 18th. The movie arrives in theaters on December 25th.
