Girls vets Natasha Lyonne and Alex Karpovsky are among the actors who make guest appearances in Tanlines’ reality-bending new music video for “Palace.” In the Sliding Doors/Choose Your Own Adventure-inspired music video, we watch as several alternate realities are explored, all triggered by Tanlines’ Eric Emm’s breakup with his girlfriend, portrayed by Orange Is the New Black‘s Lyonne. In one reality, the couple stay together, but in the other, the pair split, and that plot line is then explored with Karpovsky now in the role of Emm.
In another reality, it’s Tanlines’ Jesse Cohen who’s dating Lyonne’s character, while yet another thread examines what would happen if the duo sold out or stayed true to their indie roots. The video for “Palace,” off Tanlines’ 2015 LP Highlights, was written and directed by Karpovsky and Teddy Blanks and made in collaboration with Urban Outfitters’ ongoing music video series.
Talking to Urban Outfitters about “Palace,” Karpovsky discussed his resemblance to Emm. “Well, I’m one of those people who never really sees the resemblance. Everyone’s like, ‘Oh, you look like this guy or that guy,’ and I just don’t see it,” Karpovsky said. “I don’t know how Eric feels about it; I’ve never asked him. A few weeks ago someone sent me a link to this Portuguese cooking show, hosted by a guy who actually does look like me a lot. It was the only time when I did the whoa thing and freaked out a little bit.”
The video, created and co-produced by Urban Outfitters as part of their UO Music Video Series, boasts cameos from High Maintenance‘s Ben Sinclair and The Wire‘s Leo Fitzpatrick and features some subtle, clever nods to Girls: When Karpovsky goes to Lyonne’s place to drop off some reconciliatory gifts, one of the items in the wicker basket is a copy of Lena Dunham’s Not That Kind of Girl.
