Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles is stepping out on her own this January 14th with her debut solo album, That Girl. Rick Rubin produced the 11-song set at his Shangri-La Studios in Malibu, California. Nettles worked with songwriters such as Butch Walker, Sara Bareilles and Richard Marx, as well as wrote material on her own. She also tackles Bob Seger’s “Like a Rock.”

The 26 Albums You Need to Hear This Fall

“I put no conscious guides or governors on the creation of this album other than to write songs that I want to sing,” she said in a statement. “Working with Rick Rubin was a dream come true and the result is an album that plays to my roots – country, Seventies radio, gospel and singer-songwriter.”

It’s got a lot of cool directions,” Rubin told Rolling Stone earlier this year of the material. “There’s country,  but also blues, jazz, island rhythms, great classic rock moments, and a lot of soul.”

Nettles will embark on a 30-date tour, starting February 13th. She’ll also host ABC’s holiday special, CMA Country Christmas on December 2nd. Sugarland’s last studio album was 2010’s The Incredible Machine, a collection of songs that were inspired by the steampunk movement.
