Country-rock singer Steve Earle knows a thing or two about the craft of songwriting – and he’ll get to pass along his knowledge next year at Camp Copperhead, his very own songwriting course, which is being held from July 7th to 11th at the Full Moon Resort in Big Indian, New York.

Earle will be the only instructor at the camp (which takes its name from his signature 1988 tune “Copperhead Road”) – and it promises to be an intimate experience, with only 100 or so students in attendance. In the mornings, Earle will lead a class on specific elements of songwriting, while afternoons will be devoted to workshopping, with students working in pairs under Earle’s supervision. The evenings, however, will be a bit more laid-back, with post-dinner open-mic sessions that allow students to play their newly written songs.

Of course, that kind of hands-on experience won’t come cheap: Prices (including classes, meals and accommodations) range from $1,199 (for tent camping) to $1,595 (for a double-occupancy room with a shared hall bath). More details are available on the camp’s website

Earle shares his excitement for the camp in a press release: “I love to teach,” he says. “I have fun doing it. . . . I can teach the things that I’ve learned – from doing it – that make you a better songwriter if you already are one. Even if you weren’t put on the planet to be a songwriter, I think you’ll appreciate and understand songwriting better through taking this course.”

Earle released his 15th LP, The Low Highway, back in April.
