St. Vincent Wants ‘All of Your Mind’ in New Single ‘Digital Witness’

It’s the second track she’s shared from her forthcoming album, ‘St. Vincent’

St. Vincent frontwoman Annie Clark comments on high-tech voyeurism in “Digital Witness,” a new single from her forthcoming LP St. Vincent, her fourth. Amid a funky horn riff that sounds like something off her most recent release – Love This Giant, her collaborative record with David Byrne – she sings, “People turn their TV on, it looks just like a window.” On the chorus she sings wrily, “If I can’t show it/ If you can’t see me/ What’s the point of doing anything?” And she ends the satire by saying, “I want all of your mind/ Give me all of your mind.” Through it all, she keeps up with the track’s bass-heavy pace, intermingling some synth-pop flourishes into the chorus that nicely complement the funky riff.

Clark recently said that “the groove needed to be paramount” on her new record. To achieve that, she recorded St. Vincent with Dap Kings drummer Homer Steinweiss and Midlake percussionist McKenzie Smith. “I wanted to make a party record you could play at a funeral,” she said, which may explain some of the caustic lyrics on “Digital Witness.”

Clark premiered the song on BBC 6Music Breakfast earlier today. The track is available as an instant download when preordering St. Vincent on iTunes.

She recorded the 11-track record with producer John Congleton, who helmed previous St. Vincent LPs Actor and Strange Mercy and helped produce Love This Giant. The new album is set to come out February 25th. Clark released the first single from St. Vincent, “Birth in Reverse,” in December, when she also announced an extensive tour in support of the album. The tour kicks off in Germany in February and makes its way to the States, for a gig at New York City’s Terminal 5, later that month.
