St. Vincent’s Annie Clark reunited with filmmaker Terri Timely for “Cruel,” the first video from her forthcoming third album Strange Mercy. As with their previous collaborations on the videos for “Actor Out of Work” and “Marrow,” the clip is exceptionally sleek and subtly unnerving, with the gorgeous, porcelain-skinned Clark starring as a young suburban mother tortured by her children and buried alive by her much-older husband. It’s very dark stuff, but it’s also quite witty, in a gallows-humor sort of way. The bit in which Clark plays a warped guitar solo with a sack over her head in the trunk of the family car is especially amusing.
