Singles appear on new album ‘Young Sick Camellia’
During their set, singer Paul Janeway and the band performed the grooving midtempo ballad “Apollo,” one of two singles they played from their new album, Young Sick Camellia. Janeway’s passionate delivery of the romantic song culminated in a lilting falsetto that brought him to his knees.
They also performed the funky, pulsating “Got it Bad,” which addresses hypocritical evangelism. “Gun-shaped Bible and a loaded tongue,” Janeway sang over the horn-tipped, disco-flavored melodies. “Jesus ain’t the problem but he started one.”
“I think we’re reckless in a lot of ways,” Janeway told Rolling Stone of the more experimental and psychedelic turns they’ve made on their new album. He added that they could have made another straight-down-the-middle R&B/soul album, “But who gives a shit about that?” he said. “How is that fun? You have to take risks. You have to be willing to fail.”
