Darlene Love’s new album Introducing Darlene Love – featuring newly written songs by Bruce Springsteen, Jimmy Webb, Linda Perry and Steven Van Zandt – is still three weeks from release, but the legendary Wall of Sound singer has released a video for the Elvis Costello-penned single “Forbidden Nights.” Be on the lookout for cameos by Springsteen, Costello, Van Zandt, Joan Jett, David Letterman, Bill Murray and Paul Shaffer.
The video was shot last month in Asbury Park, New Jersey with many of the extras recruited via social media and instructed to wear beach gear. The video shows Love driving out to the beach with her backup singers, picking up Jett and Shaffer along the way and passing by Costello, Springsteen, Van Zandt and a hitchhiking Murray. It leads to a big concert on the beach and wraps with Letterman eating a bowl of cereal and exclaiming his love for Darlene.
Producer Van Zandt reached out to many of the best songwriters in the business when he began assembling material for Introducing Darlene Love. “I said to them, ‘I want big,'” Van Zandt told Rolling Stone. “I want horns and strings.’ Her voice wants that. And I told them we weren’t waiting, so I gave them a month or two…Elvis Costello jumped in like a motherfucker. He sent me four songs within a day.”
Love and Van Zandt are celebrating the release of the LP with a special show at the Paramount Theater in Asbury Park on September 12th, and again on September 18th at the Whiskey A Go Go in Los Angeles. She’ll also be playing the tunes on her annual Christmas tour later this year. “I always look forward to Christmastime,” she says. “For the last 10 years, my Christmas shows have been building, building, building. It used to just be all of December until January 1st, but now its leaked into November and even some at the end of October! We couldn’t fit in any more shows this year if we tried!”
