Spoon Preview New Album With 30-Second Teaser

Texas rockers Spoon have been relatively quiet since 2010’s Transference, as frontman Britt Daniel shifted his attention to focus on supergroup Divine Fits with Wolf Parade and Handsome Furs’ Dan Boeckner. But with the band revealing on Twitter over the weekend that they were “one week away from a finished album,” the group decided to share a 30-second teaser of the as-yet-untitled new album.
Q&A: Britt Daniel on New Supergroup Divine Fits and the Future of Spoon
Label simply “Hi,” the video shows a snippet of a new recording on an Oscilloscope. The new songs may, as Daniel said last year, contain “slightly more soul than the last record,” but the snippet contrasts fractured guitars with haunting folk-pop.
When Rolling Stone caught up with Daniel in 2012, the singer admitted that the process for the new Spoon album was different than past efforts. “I do have a couple songs set aside and I’ve been telling them to maybe write some music maybe for me to sing on top of, you know,” said Daniel. “I’ve never done it that way but I’d like to try that. It was my way of saying, like, ‘If you don’t want to just sit around, you could be working on this.’ You know, maybe like get us off to a start. When I come back, we’ll be a little ahead of the game.”
As Consequence of Sound noted last year, the band began recording their eighth album last March at drummer/producer Jim Eno’s Public Hi-Fi Studios in Austin, TX. Eight song titles were announced in May: “The Rent I Pay,” “Naff Bag,” “Millionaires,” “Let Me Be Mine,” “Modern Girls,” “I Ain’t the One,” “Fresh From Your Pages,” and “Give Me It.”
The new album will be the band’s sixth for Merge Records.
