Spike Lee, Anohni, Pharoah Sanders and Kamasi Washington lead the festivities at this year’s Red Bull Music Academy Festival, which invades Manhattan and Brooklyn from April 29th to May 22nd.
“A Conversation with Spike Lee” on May 2nd at the SVA Theatre finds the Do the Right Thing director discussing his use of music in film during a career-spanning chat with Nelson George. Anohni will debut her new LP Hopelessness and its stage show with a pair of concerts May 18th and 19th at the Park Avenue Armory.
A supernova jazz bill hits the fest May 8th as saxophonists Kamasi Washington and spiritual jazz legend Pharoah Sanders headline a performance that also boasts the Sun Ra Arkestra.
Other unique panels and performances include Dizzee Rascal performing his 2003 grime classic Boy in Da Corner live in its entirety for the first time (May 6th), a roundtable conversation on trap music with the genre’s leading producers like Metro Boomin’, Sonny Digital and Zaytoven (April 30th) and a May 16th performance of avant-guitarist Glenn Branca’s latest symphonies at the Masonic Hall.
