Sleater-Kinney Draft Sarah Silverman, Norman Reedus for Star-Studded Video

Gerard Way, Fred Armisen, Evan Rachel Wood, Ellen Page, Vanessa Bayer and others appear in the clip for “No Cities to Love”

Sleater-Kinney called on their famous friends to help them make the video for the title song of their upcoming comeback album, No Cities to Love. What they created was a virtual who’s who of indie musicians and actors doing their best impressions (or anti-impressions) of the band.

The looseness of the casting allowed the group’s famous friends to sing along via webcam or in familiar locations, like Ellen Page dancing with the Hollywood sign behind her, Fred Armisen playing the keyboard on a New York City subway platform and Connie Britton rocking out in front of a wall painted with the word “Nashville.” The takes on the song range from silly (Andy Samberg crooning) to serious (Evan Rachel Wood’ s headbanging).

Other notable cameos include My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way, Brie Larson, Natasha Lyonne, Sarah Silverman, J Mascis, Vanessa Bayer, Miranda July and Norman Reedus. Band members Corin Tucker, Carrie Brownstein and Janet Weiss also make appearances to sing their own tune karaoke-style.

On Twitter, some of the stars have noted how honored they felt to be asked to appear in the clip, especially alongside “some very awesome people,” as Way tweeted. The MCR singer, like the other guest stars, is not just a friend but a huge fan of the band as well. On his recent tour in support of his solo debut Hesitant Alien, the singer ended his shows with a cover of “I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone.” Actress Ellen Page has also been quite vocal of her love and support of Sleater-Kinney, posting frequently about the upcoming album.

No Cities to Love is available to stream now via NPR and will be available to purchase via Sub Pop on January 20th. On February 8th, the band begins its first tour in nearly nine years in Spokane, Washington.
