Sheryl Crow on Going Country: ‘Nashville is Amazing’

Some may have been surprised when superstar Sheryl Crow — who’s best known for her pop-oriented slateof hits, such as “All I Want to Do” and “Soak Up the Sun” — decided to make a move to country music with her latest album, “Feels Like Home,” which has pushed her firmly into the ranks of country awards shows, peer recognition, and a new fanbase.

Turns out that the genre has never been far from the Missouri native’s heart: “I’ve just never been interested in the whole format thing,” the 52-year-old singer says. “I’ve always gotten away with having songs that got played in a lot of different places. I’ve realized that the country format is very specific…but I do feel that the songs that have been my biggest hits were definitely inspired by country.”

“Nashville is amazing,” Crow explains of her nine years living in Music City, nothing that the wealth of musical talent has inspired her to new levels of artistry. “It ups your game [as a songwriter].”

Another thing that’s caused her to grow and expand her range? Her two young sons, who’ve taught her how to balance life on the road and the stage with life at home being a mom.

Crow is up for Female Vocalist of the Year at the 2014 Academy of Country Music Awards, which will be held April 6 in Las Vegas.
