Four years after a YouTube prankster blended a cover of Tennessee Ernie Ford’s “Sixteen Tons” with footage of Jeff Beck and ZZ Top‘s Billy Gibbons playing together, the modern blues artists have made their own cover and video to show they’re in on the joke.
ZZ Top began performing that tune on tour with Beck on their 2014 and 2015 tour – using the same arrangement as the spoof clip – and they included it on the former group’s recently released live album ZZ Top Live! Greatest Hits From Around the World. Gibbons, in a statement, described the new version as “a mega meta kinda thang.”
The original jokey video featured scenes from Jeff Beck’s set at the concert celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at Madison Square Garden in 2009. The tune they actually played together that night was ZZ Top’s “Rough Boy,” another song they reprised live on their joint tour together a few years back. A recording of ZZ Top and Beck playing that song is also on the ZZ Top Live! release.
