See Spike Jonze’s Impromptu Karen O Video Starring Elle Fanning

The director took a 10-minute break from producing a one-act play to make a video for Yeah Yeah Yeahs singer’s new solo album ‘Crush Songs’

Noted Karen O fan Spike Jonze, who included the Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman’s solo recording “The Moon Song” in his film Her last year – earning her an Oscar nomination – has thrown his support behind her again with an impromptu music video he made at the Met during New York Fashion Week. The director took a break from working on a one-act play for his friend Humbert Leon’s fashion brand, Opening Ceremony, to capture actress Elle Fanning’s reaction to “Ooo,” the lead track on the singer’s recently released solo record, Crush Songs.

“The idea was to do a play instead of a regular fashion show during Fashion Week, and, miraculously, we were able to do it at the New York Metropolitan Opera House,” Jonze wrote in a post for Vice. “Also, this week my dear friend Karen is putting out her first solo album of precious, personal love and heartache gems titled Crush Songs. They are songs made so intimately and spontaneously alone in her bedroom a few years ago that they feel more like unguarded whispers from her heart than a traditionally produced album.

“So on Sunday, during a 10-minute break, as we were rehearsing and lighting at the Met, we made a very impromptu ‘music video’ for Karen in the spirit of her album,” he continued. “It just seemed like if you have the Opera House, that song and Elle Fanning together, you shouldn’t let the opportunity go by. So we made this as a surprise gift for Karen to congratulate her on her album. She is going to see this for the first time as you do. I hope you enjoy.”

In January, Karen O’s reaction to her Oscar nomination was a hearty “Holy smokes!” “It’s wild because ‘The Moon Song’ was written and recorded in the most humble of circumstances; at my dining room table, a few paces away from the couch I read the script for Her for the first time,” she told Rolling Stone at the time.

She performed “The Moon Song” at the Oscars in February, but lost to Frozen’s ubiquitous “Let It Go.”
