Miley Cyrus helped launch Maya Rudolph and Martin Short’s new variety show Maya and Marty with a spectacularly old-school musical performance. The singer mashed up Leonard Cohen and Peggy Lee with some help from Rudolph.
Clad in a tuxedo complete with a sparkly top hat and giant white flower, Cyrus launched her set by crooning Cohen’s 1988 track “I’m Your Man.” Once she finished the track, she ripped off her pants as she began singing Lee’s “I’m A Woman” while the set transitioned from dark and lounge-y to bright and sparkly. The show’s co-host Rudolph entered the set in a more disheveled tuxedo look to help sing Lee’s classic as the pair synced up vaudevillian choreography along the way.
Cyrus was one of several big-name guests who helped kick off NBC’s latest attempt at the variety show format. Current and former SNL cast members Kate McKinnon, Kenan Thompson and Jimmy Fallon joined in on the fun while Tom Hanks and Larry David also contributed to some sketches. Cyrus also showed off her acting skills in a sketch inspired by the children’s book Goodnight Moon.
