See Michel Gondry’s Captivating Video for White Stripes’ ‘City Lights’

Jack White has reteamed with director Michel Gondry, the auteur behind four of the White Stripes’ most renowned music videos, for the track “City Lights,” a recently completed White Stripes track that features on White’s new Acoustic Recordings 1998 – 2016.

In the video – which the filmmaker shot on his own without notifying White’s Third Man until it was completed – Gondry takes a simple, everyday premise and stretches it out for five captivating minutes: A single shot of the exterior of a shower, with the bather visually drawing out the song’s lyrics in the steam and condensation on the shower door. With each line, the steam slowly erases the previous drawing, and a new image is sketched on the door.

“City Lights” marks Gondry’s fifth collaboration with the now-disbanded group, following his iconic videos for the Legos-utilizing “Fell in Love With a Girl,” “Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground,” “The Hardest Button to Button” and Get Behind Me Satan‘s “The Denial Twist.” “City Lights” was initially penned for that 2005 White Stripes LP but remained unreleased until Third Man’s Record Store Day 2015. White completed work on the recording for the upcoming Acoustic Recordings comp.

On Friday, White appeared on The Tonight Show to perform a touching two-song medley as well as trash-talk Jimmy Fallon’s guitar of choice.
