See Marilyn Manson’s Unsettling, Phallic ‘Deep Six’ Video
Perennial metal boogieman Marilyn Manson presents a new kind of nightmare in the video for his gothy dance single “Deep Six,” which will appear on his upcoming record The Pale Emperor. Rather than revisit the neo-Bosch grotesqueries or salacious drug orgies of past videos, the singer enlisted surrealist visual artist Bart Hess to create a stark vignette that shows a CGI corrugated black tube encasing both Manson and a nude model (sans nipples, of course). The imagery’s sexual connotations are obvious, especially in a house-of-mirrors style shot when the phallic-looking tube emerges from Manson’s mouth, only to repeat again and again.
The video director’s website boasts Hess’ “fascination for the human body and the manipulation of it,” as well as highlighting his skills with material, animation and photographic media. The filmmaker previously designed the “slime outfit” for Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” clip.
The Pale Emperor is due out January 20th, and Manson previously issued another song from the LP, “Third Day of a Seven Day Binge.” Regarding the record’s post-punkish direction, the singer recently told The Fader he found inspiration in a salacious scene in David Lynch’s film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. “[It’s] the overall vibe of the scene, when they’re in the Pink Room and Laura Palmer and her friend are getting oral sex from someone and there’s a band playing in the background that’s sort of like the Cramps,” he said. He also cited the blues as a new influence. “The blues changed the way that I sang,” he said. “And the music has a melody and a language in and of itself.”
The singer will hit the road the day after the album comes out for a North American tour. Ticket purchases for most dates include a digital download of the record.
