Kurt Vile revels in slackerdom in the song and video for “Pretty Pimpin’,” the lead track off the indie rocker’s upcoming album, B’lieve I’m Goin Down…. “I woke up this morning, didn’t recognize the man in the mirror,” Vile sings against a bed of reverberating electric and acoustic guitar. Eventually, after a string of surrealistic lyrics about mistaking his own identity (“Who’s this stupid clown blocking the bathroom sink, but he was sporting all my clothes?”), he comes to and compliments himself by saying he looks “pretty pimpin’.” The soft-hewn video finds multiple Viles in various states of confusion.
The singer-songwriter will put out B’lieve I’m Goin Down…, his sixth full-length, on September 25th. He’ll be hitting the road to support the album beginning October 2nd in Boston and finishing up U.S. dates later that month before heading to Europe.
“This focused, brilliantly clear and seemingly candid record is a breath of fresh air,” Vile’s friend Kim Gordon wrote in a statement. “B’lieve I’m Goin Down… is a handshake across the country, East to West Coast, thru the dustbowl history (‘Valley of Ashes’) of woody honest strait forward [sic] talk…. The record is all air, weightless, bodyless [sic], but grounded in convincing authenticity, in the best version of singer-songwriter up-cycling.”
Vile told Rolling Stone in April that he was hoping to make an album that was more transcendent-sounding than its predecessor, 2013’s Wakin on a Pretty Daze. “The music drones on and on, but in a freer way,” he said. “There’s a sort of melancholy in the way the music just sprawls. It wanders.”
