See John Lydon Praise Bettie Page in New Public Image Ltd. Video

Track appears on post-punks’ recent ‘What the World Needs Now … ‘ LP

John Lydon considers Bettie Page, the sable-haired pinup model who was an early Playboy Playmate and stag-film star, a “pioneer.” “She had the courage to do something no one else was doing,” he told Rolling Stone earlier this year of why he recorded a song called “Bettie Page” on Public Image Ltd.‘s latest, What the World Needs Now … . “I admired what she was doing, so it’s a song of adoration.”

The post-punk group recently made a video for the tune, streaming above (via Spin), which mostly focuses on footage of him singing the tune, as well as a few shots of his band and some of him in the backseat of a taxi. Like the clip they made made earlier this year for “Double Trouble,” the video sports a home-shot quality.

Lydon told Rolling Stone this year that the tune began with a “crazy little pattern” guitarist Lu Edmonds had come up with. “He was just strumming on his acoustic guitar, and I was going, ‘Bettie Page, Bettie Page,'” Lydon says, adding some staccato punch to the model’s name. “Lu goes off into his internet and finds all these old Bettie Page videos and film things. There’s one in particular of her dancing around a pole and it was so awful but at the time got her into all manner of trouble. You know how wooden it was then, but she had the courage to do something no one else was doing. That’s why I sing, ‘Bettie Page, you can have my stage.’ People like her are the evolved corps. They take us to the next level.”

Now that the band has released the album, it is getting ready to hit the road. Public Image Ltd. will perform at New Orleans’ Voodoo Music festival on Halloween, and the group will tour North America through November 29th.
