See Iggy Pop, Josh Homme’s Visceral ‘China Girl’ on ‘Austin City Limits’

Performance teases rock legend’s debut on long-running PBS performance series alongside ‘Post Pop Depression’ band

Iggy Pop and his Post Pop Depression band, including Queens of the Stone Age‘s Josh Homme, blitz through a visceral version of his 1977 track “China Girl” in a preview of the singer’s debut performance on Austin City Limits.

Pop unfurls his quivering vibrato over the supergroup’s guitar-heavy arrangement. Midway through the seven-minute take, he exits the stage and lets the sveltely dressed band take over, as Homme and Dean Fertita (Queens of the Stone Age, the Dead Weather) crank out psychedelic, harmonized guitar solos.

Homme, Fertita and drummer Matt Helders comprised Pop’s backing band on Post-Pop Depression, his 17th solo LP, released in March. Pop’s version of “China Girl,” co-written with David Bowie, appeared on the former’s 1977 solo debut, The Idiot; the track later gained popularity with Bowie’s 1983 version from Let’s Dance.

Pop’s ACL performance will air Saturday, October 29th on PBS. The setlist spans the singer’s entire solo career, from the late Seventies through Post Pop Depression. The show’s 42nd season kicked off October 1st with Paul Simon and, throughout the month, featured performances from James Bay/Rhiannon Giddens, Robert Plant and Florence + the Machine/Andra Day.

Natalia Lafourcade and Grupo Fantasma will appear on the November 5th episode, followed by My Morning Jacket and Ben Harper on November 12th.
