Belgium’s Oathbreaker have been making expansive, forward-thinking hardcore since their formation in 2008, but their latest full-length, Rheia, released last month via Deathwish Inc., is easily their most complete offering, a dynamic mix of ethereal shoegaze, vicious black metal–tinged hardcore and vulnerable, introspective lyrics courtesy of frontwoman Caro Tanghe. Standout song “Immortals” captures all of this in one track, and its orgiastic accompanying video is as simultaneously unsettling yet seductive as the group’s music.
“The song is about emotional betrayal and how that numbed me for a long time,” Tanghe explains. “Being apathetic to any form of social and emotional engagement. In the video we wanted to push the viewer in a voyeuristic position. Looking at scenes you’re not allowed to see. It’s a weird, awkward sexual setting and the lead person is not part of it. It’s about being numb to your surroundings, apathy in an extreme situation as this.”
