See Ghost Channel ‘Dracula’ in New ‘Square Hammer’ Video

Ghost have followed up their Grammy-winning Meliora album with a new EP, Popestar. It contains covers of songs by Echo and the Bunnyman (“Nocturnal Me”), Simian Mobile Disco (“I Believe”), Eurythmics (“Missionary Man”) and Swedish rockers Imperiet (“Bible”). It also features a new song, “Square Hammer,” with a swirling keyboard-and-guitar riff and catchy chorus.

To herald the release, they’ve made a video for the tune. In the clip, the group’s zombie-pope rocker Papa Emeritus III and its “nameless ghoul” musicians attend a red-carpet screening of a silent film called Square Hammer, which bears an eerie resemblance to Dracula. In the movie within a movie, a man with a torch visits a shadowy castle where he meets (surprise!) Papa Emeritus III and uncovers a coffin that contains a square-faced hammer that has the power of bringing the movie’s fantasy world into reality. The singer and his bandmates react melodramatically to the happenings onscreen.

Earlier this year, Ghost beat out more traditional headbangers Slipknot and Lamb of God at the Grammys to win the awards ceremony’s Best Metal Performance trophy for Meliora. “We’re pretty open with the fact that we were happy to be nominated, especially for a Grammy,” a Nameless Ghoul told Rolling Stone the day after the win. “Very, very few Swedish artists are, and when they do, they don’t win it. We had the motivation that we’re not going to win this, but we’re doing it for the laughs. We had already won in that sense. And when the category came up and we came into the room, it was ‘all right, no rest for the wicked.’ Then all of a sudden, you feel how fucking important it actually is. Getting a Grammy is not to be belittled at all. It means a lot. All of a sudden you’re elevated to another level.”

The band is touring North America on its Popestar Tour through November.
