See Evan Rachel Wood Bewitch Brandon Flowers in ‘Can’t Deny My Love’ Video

New clip from Killers singer inspired by Nathaniel Hawthorne story

Brandon Flowers has looked to the past in more ways than one for his new era. Along with an even heavier dose of New Wave influencing his solo single “Can’t Deny My Love,” the song’s video takes the singer and co-star Evan Rachel Wood back to the 19th century.

According to DIY Magazine, the video’s plot is inspired by Nathaniel Hawthorne’s short story “Young Goodman Brown.” Wood plays Flowers’ wife, who begs him to not leave their home. As he denies her pleas and leaves their village, the townspeople appear to keep staring at him. He arrives in a forest at night and is offered a staff by Psychedelic Furs’ Richard Butler. After turning away the evil object, Flowers finds his wife to have accepted the powerful staff. He suddenly wakes up the following morning, leading him to wonder if it was all a dream.

“Can’t Deny My Love” is the first single off Flowers’ Ariel Rechtshaid-produced LP The Desired Effect, due out May 18th. The album is his second solo release following 2010’s Flamingo. Though he’ll be promoting the new album — and embarking on a brief UK tour in May — Flowers is scheduled to make a festival appearance at San Diego’s Kaaboo Festival in September with his band the Killers.

Wood has starred in numerous music videos throughout her career, including Green Day’s “Wake Me Up When September Ends” and Marilyn Manson’s “Heart-Shaped Glasses.” This year, she voiced the main character in Disney’s animated feature Strange Magic.
