See Conor Oberst’s Sentimental ‘You Are Your Mother’s Child’ Video

For Conor Oberst’s previous music video, “Zigzagging Toward the Light,” the Bright Eyes singer-songwriter cast himself in an oblique dystopian short about – it seemed – life in a future dominated by surveillance. His new one, on the other hand, illustrates “You Are Your Mother’s Child” with footage of masked wild things and cute kids. One runs across the beach in a shiny, Apollo-era space suit while others mess around in a naturally lit playroom. Oberst, meanwhile, strums guitar on a TV near the water and in front of a small fireplace.

In a recent Rolling Stone story, the 34-year-old reflected on his own real-life wife and youth. “She’s a reason to go home,” he said of the former, whom he met it Mexico and wed in 2010. “I’ve been writing songs since I was fucking 13 years old. So much of my younger life was devoted to endless tours and a frantic need to create. But maybe I don’t need to chase every ambition.”
Upside Down Mountain, on which “Mother’s Child” appears as track 10, was released May 19th on Nonesuch Records. Oberst will continue touring in support of it through October 5th, with upcoming dates at the Newport Folk Festival (July 27th), Late Night With David Letterman (July 28th) and Central Park Summerstage (July 29th).
