See Billy Corgan Join Peter Hook for Triumphant ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’

Smashing Pumpkins guitarist Jeff Schroeder also joined in on Joy Division cover at Chicago gig

Smashing PumpkinsBilly Corgan and Jeff Schroeder joined former Joy Division and New Order bassist Peter Hook and his band, the Light, for a cover of Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart” in Chicago late last week. Video captured at the venue the Metro shows Corgan with only a mic, arm outstretched, as he sings the tune’s dreary chorus and Schroeder plays its post-punky riff on his guitar. At the end of the set, Corgan takes a gift from a fan, while Hook removes his shirt to say his thank yous.

In recent years, Hook has worked hard to keep the memory of Joy Division alive, writing a book about the short-lived group (2013’s Unknown Pleasures: Inside Joy Division) and playing sets of the album’s songs in concert.

Hook has tried to ensure that Joy Division’s legacy doesn’t come off too dark. “There is something, from my point of view, lacking, which was the humanity and the humor,” the bassist told Rolling Stone about his recollection of the band in his book. “I always felt that making Ian out to be this deep, dark genius was committing the same sin as the musical dinosaurs used to commit – whereas Johnny Rotten and the punk movement were all about demystification and that anybody can do it.”

In Pumpkins news, the group is readying the release of its upcoming record, Monuments to an Elegy, which features Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee behind the kit. So far, the group has put out two songs from the record, the driving “One and All” and the emotional “Being Beige.” The album is slated to come out on December 9th.
