See Beyonce’s Stunning Cover of Prince’s ‘The Beautiful Ones’
Beyoncé paid tribute to Prince when she reprised her cover of the Purple Rain ballad “The Beautiful Ones” at the Dallas stop of her Formation World Tour. The singer most famously covered the song at Glastonbury in 2011.
Beyoncé belted the song solo, from the floor and hit the falsetto Prince used throughout his version of the song. “Do you want her/ Or do you want me?/ ‘Cause I want you,” Beyonce sang, a lyric that would have fit in her own album Lemonade.
On the inaugural date of her tour, Beyonce paid a more somber and simple tribute to Prince by turning the stage purple and playing his original version of “Purple Rain.” She also interpolated Vanity 6’s “Nasty Girl” into her own song “Blow” as a tribute to Prince’s protégé Vanity, who died in February.
Beyoncé and Prince first encountered each other in 2004 rehearsing for their joint Grammy performance. They played a medley of Purple Rain songs as well as a “Crazy in Love” musical and dance interlude. In an interview following the performance, Prince noted that he had begun to teach Beyoncé some chords on the piano, advising her to learn how to play the instrument. She has shown off her piano playing skills in the video for Lemonade track “Love Drought.”
The singer’s headlining set at Glastonbury followed six years later, where she transitioned “The Beautiful Ones” into the Kings of Leon’s “Sex on Fire.”
