See Ariana Grande’s Soulful Performance of ‘Jason’s Song (Gave It Away)’
Ariana Grande pulled out a deep cut when she stopped by the The Tonight Show for a performance on Monday night: she chose to sing “Jason’s Song (Gave It Away),” which appeared on the Target edition of her Dangerous Woman album. The track uses a backdrop of light, cocktail soul for a declaration of independence. “I’m no blow-up doll, no free-for-all, no slave to your decision,” Grande sings. “Gotta find a way to break the spell, to get the hell away from those who block my vision.”
While most of her LP was overseen by major names in the Top 40 songwriting world — Max Martin, Savan Kotecha — “Jason’s Song” was co-written by Jason Robert Brown and Jeffrey Lesser. Brown is a composer and playwright who has won several Tonys for his work on Broadway. He collaborated with Grande in the past when she participated in a production of the musical 13.
Brown joined Grande on The Tonight Show stage, hammering out the melody on piano. Grande thanked her collaborators later on Twitter. “I’ll never ever get used to performing with @theroots,” she wrote. “What an honor.” “That was my favorite performance I’ve ever done I think,” she added. “Thanks @MrJasonRBrown for using my voice the way it’s meant to be heard.”
