Sam Smith on New Album: ‘I’m Going Even Deeper’

Singer also reveals the one 'In the Lonely Hour' song he "really hates"

Sam Smith called his new album “fucking great,” in an interview with The Associated Press, adding, “It’s really deep shit that’s coming out — that’s all I’ll say.”

The British singer said he’s been exploring new emotional territory on the follow-up to his 2014 Grammy-winning smash, In the Lonely Hour. While that album was already a deeply personal break-up album, Smith said, “I’m putting my heart even more out on the fucking line. I’m going even deeper. I can’t believe I’m even doing it, but I’m going even deeper.”

While Smith added that his new LP will function as “a beautiful little transition” from In the Lonely Hour, he said that listening back to his debut, he now hears some things that he’d like to change. The singer admitted there’s one song he can no longer abide.

“The core of the album, songs like ‘Stay With Me,’ ‘I’m Not the Only One’ — actually all the songs except ‘Money on My Mind’ — I really love and I’m really proud of the classic-ness of the way they sound, because I still listen to them now and I still love them,” Smith said.

A release date and title for Smith’s new album has yet to be announced. The singer recently picked up an Academy Award for co-writing “Writing’s on the Wall,” from the James Bond movie, Spectre.
