Sam Smith, Disclosure Drop Simmering Drake Cover

Sam Smith and Disclosure visited the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge on Wednesday, and as is customary when appearing on that program, the “Latch” tandem was tasked with picking a song to cover. Their choice: Drake‘s latest smash single “Hotline Bling,” the rapper’s moody ode to booty calls. In the hands of the British dance duo and the Song of the Year Grammy winner, the track is transformed into a simmering after-hours jam. Listen to their “Hotline Bling” cover at around the eight-minute mark below:
“Drake and Kendrick [Lamar] are just absolutely killing it at the moment,” Disclosure’s Guy Lawrence said of the pick. “They’re like mine and Howard’s faves at the moment in that world, and it made sense to choose this song.”
“Hotline Bling,” which Drake originally premiered on his OVO Sound Radio show on Beats 1 during his Meek Mill feud, was initially overshadowed by the diss tracks, but has since rose to prominence on its own. On last week’s Billboard Hot 100, “Hotline Bling” had risen to Number 16 and climbing, especially with the help of cover versions like Disclosure and Smith’s.
After both Disclosure and Smith used their collaborative single “Latch” as a launchpad to bigger things, the two artists joined up once again for the Caracal cut “Omen,” with Smith also making a cameo in Disclosure’s follow-up video for “Jaded.” Smith also recently revealed that “Writing’s on the Wall,” his James Bond theme for the upcoming 007 film Spectre, will also feature “additional production” from the Lawrence brothers.
