The Powerpuff Girls will return to airwaves for a one-night special next month, and they’re getting a little help from a famous friend, Mr. Ringo Starr. According to Time, the former Beatle will voice a “flamboyant mathematician” named Fibonacci Sequins and contribute an original tune, “I Wish I Was A Powerpuff Girl,” along with a music video. The special, titled “Dance Pantsed,” will air January 20th at 7:30 p.m. EST on Cartoon Network.
The original Powerpuff series, which aired from 1998 to 2005, followed the adventures of three kindergarten superheroes named Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup, fighting crime (and their arch-nemesis, a demented monkey named Mojo Jojo) in the fictional Townsville, USA. The upcoming special will feature a particularly evil plot: Mojo kidnaps Starr’s character, Sequins, and (after his plans are foiled) invents a sinister video game, “Dance Pants R-EVILution,” in order to steal the elusive Chemical X and reign over the town.
Though Starr is a fresh face in the Powerpuff crew, the special will feature the core voice cast from the series. According to Variety, “Dance Pantsed” will reunite Catherine Cavadini, Tara Strong, Tom Kenny (the voice of Spongebob Squarepants), E.G. Daily (who recently appeared in the flesh during an early round of The Voice), Tom Kane and Roger L. Jackson.
Of course, not all of Starr’s recent activities have been cartoon-related: Back in June, he opened up an exhibit at the Grammy museum called “Ringo: Peace & Love,” and he also released a revealing e-book of previously unseen Beatles photos.
